Best BJJ Gis 2017

Best BJJ Gi

I distinctly remember my first Gi – the “Howard” Gi. For any of your old school BJJ-ers out there you’ll remember the Howard it was one of the bulkiest most badasss Gis available, actually at that time it was literally one of the only Gis available.  It had a collar so thick you were basically unchoke-able.

Faster forward to today and the number of BJJ gis on the market has exploded. There are literally hundreds of Gis available and it can be confusing to pick which one is the best for you.

My name is Mark Summers and I’ve been doing BJJ for over 15 years, I’ve bought over 15 Gis and worn and reviewed a lot more.  The point of this guide is to great a one-stop resource to help you choose exactly what kind of Gi is best for you.

If you want the quick version of this entire post, I’d go with the Tatami Gi for best mix of value/quality. If you want the highest end gi to look like a total badass hit up the Storm T3.

I’m going to review the best BJJ Gis via 4 categories:

  • Best Value
  • Best Competition Gi
  • Best Female Gis
  • Best Looking Gis
  • What Makes a Good Gi

There a few factors that make a Gi great and in order to find the absolute best brazilian jiu jitsu go we’ll have to discuss a few of these, but before we do that listen to my man Marcus Almeida.

Lightweight or Normal Weight

Lightweight Gis are well… light. They are just like normal bjj gis but yet have the weight.  They are perfect for people who want something like to carry around after training or for a global BJJ globetrotting experience.  Don’t worry aabout material as most modern lightweight garments are just as durable and sturdy as regular Gis.

Size

Now this can be confusing. Choosing Gi size can be tricky business as there isn’t some regulatory body which decides how big an A1 is or how big an A2 is.  There is a little variation in size and sleeve length.

If you are confused about what size of Gi to get, use this handy chart before to figure out exactly what Gi size is best for you.

Sleeve Length

If you’re an IFBJJ competitor you’ll know that referees are pretty anal when it comes to sleeve size (especially the Japanese).  If your Gi isn’t the exact specifications required than you might not be allowed to compete.

This can be a big problem when you have a Gi that constantly shrinks on you. Luckily, the Gis I’m reviewing here all come preached and dried meaning that you won’t get some massive shrinkage on your first wash.

Shrinkage

The easiest way to avoid shrinkage is to not put your Gi in the dryer.  Doing so will make it shrink, if it’s a lower quality Gi it may string by a fair amount. This is especially true of 100% cotton Gis. As a general rule of thumb I almost always hang my Gis to dry.

Tip – If you need your Gi dried quick but don’t want to put it in the dryer. Stick them in a small room, bathroom or closet and put the dehumidifier in it, they’ll dry in 2 hours.

Color

White Gis are nice and have a classic martial arts feel to them, but be warned they will end up more yellowish-white than actual white. If you’re an excessive sweater like I am this is definitely going to happen to you.

Another option is to go with a black Gi as they look good, but be careful as most Gracie affiliated schools won’t let you train with a black Gi – only a white Gi.

Tip – If you are starting to notice your Gi is turning a different color other than white, put it in the washer with 2 capfuls of bleach. It will help restore some of the original white color.

Cost
This is my price guide for Gis:

Under 50 dollars = A shitty Gi

Between 75 – 130 = Good quality Gi that will last a long time.

150 + = Damnnnn, you fancyyyyyy!

Generally speaking I prefer to go for the medium priced Gis and also have one badass awesome looking Gi for those days I just feel like looking great.  Buying lower priced Gis is a recipe for having it fall apart half way through the training session.

Patches
Some people love to cover their Gis in patches showing all the different affiliates or sponsors that they have, other people just like to look cool.  Either way, lightweight Gis aren’t the best choice if you want lots of patches, instead aim for a cotton Gi.

What Are The Best BJJ Gis?
Well, I’m about to share with you the Gis that I like best.  I’ve tried all of these (minus the womens’ ones) and I can vouch for their quality.

FUJI ALL AROUND BJJ GI WHITE (SINGLE WEAVE)

FUJI ALL AROUND BJJ GI WHITE (SINGLE WEAVE)

If you are looking for quality and price combined the FUJI is your go-to Gi. I have this exact same model and have been using it consistently for over 3 years.  Using a single weave design it is medium weight which makes it a good Gi for hot weather as well. If you don’t want to spend too much but want a Gi that lasts this is my best recommendation.

STORM T3 RS GI

STORM T3 RS GI

So if you want to pay a bit more for great quality and design then the Storm Gi represents the best high-end Gi available on the market.  You’ll understand the second you put it on, it not only looks and feels great but it’s made of a specially woven jacket which makes it feel strong yet not too hot.  Material is also preshrunk and comes with an anti-microbial treatment which prevents it from becoming smelly.  There is also a hidden mouthguard pocket for those who always forget to bring their mouthguards.

Best Bamboo Jiu Jitsu Gi

HYPNOTIK BEARIMBOLO BAMBOO GI

HYPNOTIK BEARIMBOLO BAMBOO GI

I used to think bamboo Gis were some fad that was more about fashion than utility – until my wife bought me one early last year.  The Hypnotik is now my favorite Gi by far. It’s EXTREMELY lightweight and yet very soft.  Bamboo has natural anti-microbial properties meaning it won’t smell bad. The material feels a lot more flexible and lighter than other Gis.  When I put this on I feel like I’m wearing a really light windbreaker more than I do a Gi.

I highly highly recommend this unit for anyone who wants a quality Gi that they can use in any climate. Also I forgot to mention it dries incredibly fast, often within several hours.

I had to ask my wife about this part as she has also been training BJJ for almost 4 years now.  She recommended three different Gis (two of which I bought her ) for this section.
